Aren't chickens stupid?
Short answer: No. Chickens show rudimentary number sense, some object permanence, transitive reasoning and over two dozen distinct calls. 'Bird-brained' is a slur the science doesn't support.
These are reviewed, established findings, basic number sense, not arithmetic like a schoolchild. The point is simply that chickens are not the blank machines the food system treats them as.

The objection
“Why agonise over chickens? They’re basically biological machines, no inner life, nothing going on upstairs.”
The answer
It’s a comfortable assumption that doesn’t survive contact with the research. Lori Marino’s 2017 review Thinking Chickens, drawing together decades of peer-reviewed work, lays it out plainly: chickens are far more cognitively capable than the “bird-brained” reflex suggests [1].
Newborn chicks, hours old, show a basic number sense, tracking small quantities and even mapping them onto space the way humans lay numbers along a mental line (Rugani and colleagues, in Science) [2]. Adult hens demonstrate transitive inference: shown that A outranks B and B outranks C, they infer A outranks C, a feat that takes human children until around age seven. They display some object permanence, understanding that a thing still exists when hidden from view. And they are not silent automata: chickens use two to three dozen distinct calls, some referential, different alarm calls for an aerial predator versus a ground one [1].
They also have an emotional life worth the word. Hens show signs of empathy, becoming distressed when their chicks are, and they can anticipate the future, holding out for a larger food reward over an immediate smaller one, basic self-control.
None of this is a claim that a chicken is a person. The narrower point is harder to dodge: the animal on the plate is a sentient creature with a mind that counts, reasons and feels. “Stupid” was always a convenience rather than a finding, and it’s the convenience that lets 74 billion of them a year go unexamined.
